The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern have been encouraged by recent reports which link their club with a move for Nabil Fekir this summer.
According to reports in The Guardian, Liverpool are set to capitalise on their advantageous financial situation which has emerged as a result of their successful Champions League campaign by making a bid to sign Lyon’s Nabil Fekir this summer. Fekir is set to travel to Russia for the World Cup this summer on the back of a glittering campaign for the French giants in which he managed to score 23 goals and provide 8 assists from 40 appearances in all-competitions.
If Fekir arrives at Liverpool he will join Naby Keita who is set to complete a long-awaited transfer from RB Leipzig, and their collective presence in Jurgen Klopp’s squad could force Georginio Wijnaldum to embark on a new challenge this summer.
Fekir has operated in an advanced number ten role for Lyon this season where he has been allowed showcase the full extent of his dribbling and creative abilities and, as such, he has widely been regarded as Philippe Coutinho’s natural successor.
However, Klopp has adapted his system somewhat since Coutinho’s departure which demands his midfield trio to cover plenty of ground at both ends of the pitch, so Fekir could be forced to drop into a deeper-lying role next season.
With Fekir, Keita, Henderson, Milner, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Lallana and Wijnaldum all on Liverpool’s ranks, something will simply have to budge, and the latter could become the first casualty of a mini overhaul in personnel this summer.
Although the Holland international has shown encouraging signs of improvement this season, and has even managed to open up his goal-scoring account away from home with an instinctive finish at the Stadio Olimpico, his form simply hasn’t been good enough to hold down a starting berth ahead of the likes of Keita and Fekir.
In the best interests of both Wijnaludm’s career and Liverpool’s title aspirations for the new season, Klopp should seek to offload the distinctly average 27-year-old if he is successful in his pursuit of Lyon’s crown jewel this summer.
