Hold the presses, stop everything; Liverpool are being linked with a decent player!
That’s right, not a has-been, not a might-be-in-5-years; no, this is top German centre back, Per Mertesacker, currently plying his trade for Werder Bremen who, following their exit from the Champions League, have now conceded defeat in their bid to hang on to their star defender.
Although it has long been believed that Arsenal would be Mertesacker’s preferred destination, Liverpool have suddenly emerged as rivals for the German’s signature. Having finally admitted that he will be spending money this month, Arsene Wenger may yet see his top target snatched from under his nose.
However, anybody thinking Roy Hodgson has got his act together and is finally pursuing the calibre of players he should be, well they’d be disappointed. It’s not the Anfield boss, but rather the Director of football who is leading the chase for Mertesacker.
Damien Comolli is rumoured to have made a check on the defender before Christmas, has since been to watch him play, and has now made a personal recommendation to the board that this is the man to master Liverpool’s back-line.
Bremen will demand a fee of £10m, which is substantially lower than the estimate given when Arsene Wenger was lining up a move. However, the Bundesliga club are still hopeful of a bidding war between the two Premiership heavyweights, given the huge difference a player like Mertesacker could make to both sides.
At Liverpool, he could help deliver European football next season; at Arsenal, he could help deliver the title.
