Some Liverpool fans are devastated in the Football Transfer Tavern after learning in the Daily Mail that Steven Gerrard could move abroad before retiring, after a dispute over his contract extension.
The club legend’s current deal expires at the end of the season and it is believed the owners of the club are not willing to match his current wage of £140,000, making his future seem very much in doubt.
It is thought that the biggest stumbling block is the wages, and if they cannot agree on a sum of money that suits both parties then the deal will be off.
It is believed that with his commitments and passion for Liverpool, if he is to leave Anfield, he will not join another English club out of respect and he will look to continue his career abroad.
Manager Brendan Rodgers confessed that there would be no imminent announcement regarding Gerrard’s future.
He said: ‘There’s no update I am aware of. I think the club is talking with Steven’s representatives.’
