Borussia Dortmund legend Stefan Effenberg has tipped his former club to sign Divock Origi from Liverpool in the January transfer window.
It was recently reported in Belgium that Origi doesn’t see a place for himself in the Liverpool first-team and after the arrival of Diogo Jota in the summer transfer window, he is worried about his place in the Belgian national team. Club Brugge were mentioned as possibility and it was stated that Origi could look for a move in January (as per Voetbal 24).
Should Liverpool move on from Origi in January?
Effenberg wants BVB to go after Origi
Since then, Effenberg has written a column for T-Online and he talked about the fact that Dortmund need to sign a striker in January. Apart from Paris Saint-Germain’s Mauro Icardi, he also mentioned Origi. He tipped Dortmund to at least pursue a loan deal for Origi as he is a player who has had to sit in the stands, but has ‘proven’ his abilities before.
“Two other candidates for a winter transfer, or at least a loan deal until the end of the season: Divock Origi from Liverpool or Mauro Icardi from PSG.
“So far this season they haven’t played a role, they have just sat in the stands several times, but have long since proven their skills and might help [Dortmund] immediately.”
Effenberg also tipped Dortmund to look at the opportunity to sign Mario Mandzukic.
Time for Liverpool to sell Origi?
The 25-year-old Origi has made only seven appearances in all competitions for the Reds this season and he’s played only twice in the Premier League. He has scored once in the current campaign and that goal came in the League Cup (as per Transfermarkt).
Currently valued at £14.40m, Origi’s current deal at Anfield runs out in the summer of 2024. The Belgian was linked with a move to Aston Villa in the summer transfer window and if he really does want a move in January, it might be a good time to sell him.
Because of his contract situation, Liverpool can still get a high fee from his sale and if a club like Dortmund comes calling, they would find it easy to earn a higher fee.
