There is some interesting news for Liverpool supporters in the Football Transfer Tavern this evening.
The Daily Star report that the Reds are set to battle to sign former Manchester United goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler as Brendan Rodgers seeks a reliable back up to current number one Simon Mignolet.
According to German reports, the Hannover shot stopper’s impressive performances are attracting attention from both Schalke and Borussia Monchengladbach but Liverpool are also ready to take advantage of Zieler’s current contractual situation.
The 24-year-old’s contract at Hannover contains a release clause that could see him leave before May the 1st 2014 for a relatively low price of £7 million.
Hannover sporting director Dirk Dufner said: “I am sure that other clubs are interested in him. And if an offer comes in, Ron should definitely think about it.
“That’s part of being an intelligent player. If he decides to stay with us, so much the better.”
It is possible that Schalke are leading the race for the keeper who started his career at Old Trafford as a trainee before departing for Germany in 2010, as the fellow Bundesliga club are willing to offer him a substantial wage increase while also promising regular football.
There is also the possibility of former Northampton Town loanee Zieler staying at Hannover, with the player’s agent admitting he hasn’t ruled anything out.
He said: “We have had good discussions, but not in intensive negotiations. Of course, Ron can imagine extending his time at 96.
“He became a Bundesliga goalkeeper at Hannover and he feels comfortable there, but it is still too early to decide.”
