Liverpool and Manchester City supporters were making a lot of noise in the Transfer Tavern this weekend after seeing their teams pick up impressive victories over West Ham and Arsenal respectively in the Premier League.
Jurgen Klopp’s Reds went into their clash at the London Stadium on Saturday evening off the back of beating Huddersfield Town and Maribor in the preceding seven days, and they made it three victories in a week with a comfortable 4-1 success over Slaven Bilic’s Hammers in East London. While Pep Guardiola’s City continued their sensational start to the season with a 3-1 win over Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, with goals from Kevin De Bruyne, Sergio Aguero, and Gabriel Jesus moving the Citizens eight points clear at the summit with a ninth consecutive Premier League victory.
Thus, both sets of fans have been buzzing in the Tavern this weekend, and they are sure to be intrigued by a recent report from The Daily Mirror, which suggests that the Merseysiders are lining up a stunning move for City’s David Silva.
The 31-year-old moved to the Etihad Stadium back in 2010 and has since played a hugely influential role in helping them win two Premier League titles as well as the FA Cup in 2011, having scored 52 goals and laid on 110 assists in just 321 matches for the North West outfit.
And with seven assists in 11 league games this term, including one in the victory over Arsenal on Sunday, the Spain international continues to play a pivotal role in Guardiola’s team, although his future appears less certain given that he has yet to extend his contract at City, which is due to expire in 2019.
And Klopp’s Liverpool, as well as Serie A giants Inter Milan, are reportedly looking to exploit that uncertainty by lining up a move for Silva, who themselves are unsure as to what the future holds for midfielder Emre Can, whose deal runs out in the summer.
But whether the Reds are indeed able to lure him away from a title rival very much remains to be seen.
Landlord’s verdict: David Silva’s influence on Manchester City in the last seven years cannot be understated, and the Spaniard has continued to pull the strings in their midfield under Pep Guardiola this term.
The 31-year-old already has seven assists from just 11 Premier League games to help the Citizens shoot to the summit, underlining how integral he will be in their hopes of reclaiming the title this season.
Yet his future remains uncertain given that he has yet to extend his current deal at the Etihad Stadium, and Liverpool are plotting to exploit that in a bid to keep him in England by luring him to Anfield.
Ultimately, the Reds’ interest is surely going to accelerate talks between City and Silva’s representatives, as they will know that, although they have got a plethora of attacking talent, the 31-year-old remains as influential as ever, and would leave a huge void if he were to leave the club.
