Deadline day is fast approaching and as yet we’ve seen no new arrivals at Liverpool which is starting to worry Reds supporters in the Football Transfer Tavern.
Now speculation emerges that the Anfield outfit are reportedly interested in Benfica midfielder Andre Gomes as Brendan Rodgers desperately tries to strengthen his squad before the transfer window closes on Friday.
The news has come from Duncan Castles from The Times who indicates that the Portuguese Under-21 international is the latest name to be on Rodgers’ radar as he looks to improve his midfield after losing Lucas Leiva to a knee injury.
Rodgers has already faced huge disappointment after long-term transfer target Mohamed Salah decided to join Chelsea instead.
That leaves the Reds still seeking to bolster their side ahead of the business end of the season with Champions League football the major target.
Benfica are thought to want around £12.4 million for Gomes’ services and will be very reluctant to sell after losing midfield star Nemanja Matic back to Chelsea earlier this month.
In fact it was assumed that Gomes is indeed the long-standing replacement for Matic in Jorge Jesus’s side.
However the Reds could be prepared to match the asking price for the 20-year-old, who is thought to suit their possession orientated football.
We do wonder if Matic’s departure could make this a tough ask and are not sure if Liverpool will be able to make any progress on this front before Friday.
