There is some interesting transfer gossip pouring into the Transfer Tavern today that is really getting the Liverpool lads excited, some of them have even stopped playing snooker to hear more on this one.
The Telegraph are reporting that Brendan Rodgers is set to make his ninth signing of this summer’s transfer window, and seal a deal for Real Madrid midfield enforcer Asier Illaramendi.
The Spanish under-21 star has struggled with life as a Galactico since his move from Real Sociedad, with his first team appearances limited under a handful of different managers now.
If he goes ahead and makes the move from Spain to Anfield it would be reminiscent of a time gone by for Liverpool fans and would see the Spaniard following a similar career path to compatriot Xabi Alonso.
Alonso was also once at Real Sociedad before making a move to Anfield, and then of course later leaving for Real Madrid.
Liverpool fans will surely be hoping that the young Spanish midfielder sees this link and decides to follow in the footsteps of legendary Xabi Alonso, and come and play on Merseyside next season.
A small group of Liverpool fans enjoying a pint here in the Tavern feel that this player would add a new element to the Reds’ midfield, and could help them secure a top four finish in the Premier League next season.
Liverpool fans what do you think? Could Illaramendi finally be the long term replacement for Alonso? Let us know your thoughts below!
