Liverpool supporters have been in fine voice in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side head into the two-week break for internationals off the back of three successive victories in all competitions, two of which helping them to fifth place in the Premier League table.
Jurgen Klopp’s men breezed past Huddersfield Town 3-0 little over a fortnight ago before dispatching Maribor by the same scoreline to go top of their Champions League group, thus giving them plenty of confidence ahead of their trip to struggling West Ham. And they made it three wins in seven days as a brace from Mohamed Salah as well as goals from Joel Matip and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain sealed a comfortable 4-1 success for Klopp’s men, a result which moved them above Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal into fifth place in the Premier League table.
Thus, there have been plenty of happy Liverpudlians in the Tavern this week, and they are likely to be further encouraged by the fact that their club have been made the bookies’ favourites to land Barcelona’s Javier Mascherano in January (via Sky Bet).
The 33-year-old played his trade at Anfield between 2007 and 2010 and in that time made 139 appearances for the Reds, although was unable to win a major trophy with the Merseyside giants.
Yet the Argentina international has since gone from strength to strength at the Nou Camp with over 300 games and several major honours to his name, not least two Champions League crowns and four La Liga titles.
Yet the centre-back has been linked with a move away from Barca in recent times, and as such Sky Bet have installed Liverpool as 6/4 favourites to land the 33-year-old in the January transfer window, which intriguingly are the same odds as him leaving the Spanish giants.
Although he remains 1/2 to stay at the Nou Camp, Reds supporters are likely to be encouraged by these odds, but whether it turns into something more concrete remains to be seen.
Landlord’s verdict: Since leaving Liverpool back in 2010, Javier Mascherano has gone on to become on European football’s finest centre-backs, and exactly the sort of player the Merseyside giants could do with in the heart of their backline.
And Reds supporters could well get their wish as the Argentina international is a 6/4 favourite to make the move to Anfield in January, this all after speculation linking the 33-year-old with a move away from the Nou Camp.
And with Jurgen Klopp’s side in dire need of defensive reinforcements, they could do a lot worse than see if Mascherano fancies a return to Anfield in what could be a crucial January deal.
