The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are growing increasingly concerned at the state of their goalkeeping choices. Neither Simon Mignolet or Lorius Karius have covered themselves in glory this season, with inconsistency and mistakes continuing to plague both players.
The Reds are clearly a team on the up under Jurgen Klopp, but they’re certainly being held back by a lack of quality in a number of areas, most notably between the sticks. If they want to stand any chance of catching Man City this season, this is an issue that needs to be solved, and according to the Independent, that’s exactly what they’re looking to do.
The Independent reports that Liverpool are looking at their goalkeeping situation, with a number of players being considered as potential solutions. Jan Oblak, it is said, would be the dream signing, but financial demands could make that impossible. Two perhaps more realistic players that are mentioned are Allison and Jack Butland – with Liverpool apparently scouting both recently.
Oblak is, of course, the highest profile name featured, and he has emerged as one of Europe’s best shot-stoppers during his stint at Atletico Madrid. Elsewhere, Jack Butland is arguably England’s best young goalkeeper, and at 24-years-old, would be a fantastic long-term solution for the Reds. Allison is somewhat more of an unknown quantity, but he has impressed since moving to Roma in 2016.
The Liverpool fans in the pub are relieved that this situation is finally being looked at, and they’re hopeful that a solution will be found over the next few weeks.
For all of Liverpool’s offensive flair, their back-line has often held them back.
The capture of Virgil van Dijk will serve to help them out massively, but a new goalkeeper would be the icing on the cake for Jurgen Klopp. It makes such a big difference to have a reliable shot-stopper between the sticks, and so any of these 3 aforementioned players would be a good choice in that regard.
