Liverpool fans here at The Transfer Tavern have debated at length the club’s recent moves in the transfer market after they hit the headlines with drama surrounding Virgil van Dijk. While that may not have quite panned out the way supporters wanted, they’re mostly in agreement that signing a defender is still a big priority this summer.
For a top four side, the Reds’ defensive record in the Premier League this season was pretty poor with only Arsenal outdoing them in terms of goals conceded in the top six.
That means Jurgen Klopp simply has to strengthen his backline and moving on from the Van Dijk drama, he’s ready to make his move for another Premier League centre-back.
The Sun report that Liverpool are in for Middlesbrough’s Ben Gibson, who recently received a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad.
The 24-year-old had a fine season with Boro despite relegation and is said to command a transfer fee of £20m.
While that’s a significant outlay it could well end up proving value for money, especially if he goes on to win caps with England and continues his upward trajectory of assured defending in the top-flight.
What do you think Liverpool fans? Is Ben Gibson an adequate follow-up to the Van Dijk debacle or should Klopp be moving for a better standard of defender?
