There are some intriguing reports reaching us in the Football Transfer Tavern this evening as Jack Wilson from the Daily Star enters the bar.
Wilson is on hand to inform punters that former Barcelona and Sevilla midfielder Seydou Keita has claims he had held ‘advanced talks with Liverpool during the recent transfer window.
However these ‘talks’ were broken off once he was informed of interest from La Liga side Valencia, where he eventually signed on the dotted line before the deadline passed.
Keita, who has been playing with Chinese outfit Dalian Aerbin for the previous 18 months, said that he was seriously considering joining the Reds but preferred a transfer back to Spain.
Keita said: “When my agent told me that Valencia called to sign me, I didn’t hesitate for even a second.
“I had very advanced talks with Liverpool, but I wanted to come here and I made that known to my agent.”
Keita has now penned a deal for the rest of the season with Valencia with the possibly of another 12 months in the summer.
Wilson explains that this means the Reds and Brendan Rodgers actually missed out on three different midfield targets during January. A long-expected transfer for Ukrainian Yevhen Konoplyanka collapsed on deadline day while fellow target Mohamed Salah snubbed interest from Anfield to join Chelsea.
The 34-year-old added: “When I have come to play at Mestalle with Sevilla or Barcelona I worked very hard to win.
“It’s a very big club with very good fans and which plays football that I like.”
Do you think Keita would have been a useful signing for the Reds? Let us know your thoughts below.
