Liverpool part of heavyweight race in pursuit of £40.5m-rated midfield ace – report

Liverpool supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their team edge past Merseyside rivals Everton 2-1 to book their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup, where they will face West Brom.

Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their clash with the Toffees off the back of a 13-match unbeaten run in the Premier League, a streak that has seen them usurp both Arsenal and Tottenham to sit fourth in the table. And there may well be some FA Cup glory to follow for our resident Reds fans as goals from James Milner and Virgil van Dijk either side of a Gylfi Sigurdsson equaliser saw Klopp’s side get the better of Everton at Anfield, thus earning them a spot in round four where they will host Alan Pardew’s West Brom.

Subsequently, there have been many delighted Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, even if Philippe Coutinho’s departure to Barcelona has frustrated some, although a recent report from Diario Gol suggests that the Reds are in the market for a replacement, namely Barca’s Ivan Rakitic.

The 29-year-old made the move to the Nou Camp back in 2014 and has since played a key part in their success by making 187 appearances for the club, helping them to two La Liga titles as well as the Champions League in 2015.

However, the Croatia international is one man who could be hindered by Coutinho’s arrival, and recent reports suggest that he is seeking a move this summer, with Liverpool thought to be alongside Arsenal and Juventus in pursuit of the wantaway midfielder’s signature.

But it remains to be seen whether Reds chief Klopp can indeed get a deal done for the £40.5 million-rated midfield maestro (as per Transfermarkt) at the end of the season.

Landlord’s verdict: Philippe Coutinho’s inevitable departure to Barcelona has been confirmed in the last few days, and while it’s clearly one being celebrated by the Spanish giants, it doesn’t appear that Ivan Rakitic is overly pleased with the addition.

The 29-year-old could find himself a surplus to requirements at the Nou Camp following the 25-year-old’s arrival, and Coutinho’s ex-employers Liverpool are one side reportedly interested in luring him away from the Spanish giants in a bid to replace the Brazil international.

Rakitic has been excellent for Barca in the last three-and-a-half years and would certainly help to fill the void left by Coutinho’s departure, but with Arsenal and Juventus also thought to be in the running, it remains to be seen whether Reds chief Jurgen Klopp can get a deal done.
