Liverpool plan surprise swoop

alonso.jpgLiverpool fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern are getting more and more excited at the news from the Daily Mirror that the club are looking to lure Real Madrid’s Xabi Alonso back to the club.

Alonso left the club for Real Madrid after falling out with Rafael Benitez who seemed to be under the impression that Gareth Barry would be a better fit for the club and lets face it Liverpool never really recovered.

Now of course Alonso has stalled on a new contract with the Spanish giants and could well be set to leave the club and rejoin his former one for around £8.5 million. Liverpool will not be the only club that are interested in the midfielder and given that Jose Mourinho is likely to depart the club in the summer, it is not unthinkable that he will take one of his greatest untouchables of all, Alonso with him.

Not only is Brendan Rodgers looking to lure Alonso back but he is determined to keep Steven Gerrard at the club and will offer an extension to his current deal worth more than £130,000 per week.  Rodgers claimed that Gerrard is still one of the top players in the world and keeping the England skipper is something the club simply have to do.
