The question on the lips of most punters in the Football Transfer Tavern this morning has been, are Liverpool really title contenders?
The Reds are still six points off Chelsea at the top of the league but yesterday’s trashing of Arsenal was certainly a huge statement of intent by Brendan Rodgers’ side.
However they possibly lack the strength in depth required to compete with Manchester City and Chelsea for the title and instead Champions League qualification would still be some achievement that could open up the door to a new era at Anfield.
Today’s copy of The Mirror suggests that one of the quality players who could be joining Rodgers’ continued revolution at Liverpool is Chelsea’s defender Ashley Cole.
The England international left back is out of contract at end of the season at Stamford Bridge and Rodgers has reportedly viewed him a short-term option for the Reds.
It seems unlikely that Cole would have considered a move to a seventh-place Liverpool but with the club on course for the Champions League, perhaps the 33-year-old could emerge as a realistic target with the Blues ready to left him leave SW6.
Cole has also been linked with a big-money switch to the MLS with New York Red Bulls, but he is thought to want a least one more season in the Premier League which could be possible at Anfield.
Chelsea are understood to have outlined a move for outstanding Southampton starlet Luke Shaw as Cole’s replacement.
Do you think that Cole would have any interest in making the switch to Anfield at the end of the summer? Let us know your thoughts below.
