There are interested looks on the faces of Liverpool fans in the Football Transfer Tavern after The Guardian today links the Reds with a summer move for Shakhtar Donetsk’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan who will be available for around £22 million.
The Armenian international, who scored an incredible 25 goals in the Ukrainian Premier League last season despite playing as an attacking midfielder, has been lined up for a move to Anfield after he admitted that he wanted to play for ‘one of the strongest clubs in the world’.
It is understood that Mkhitaryan would consider a move to England despite the lack of European football at Anfield and Liverpool’s owners Fenway Sports Group are prepared to give Brendan Rodgers the funds needed to bring the 25-year-old to the club.
With uncertainty remaining about Luis Suarez given a possible swoop by Spanish giants Real Madrid, Liverpool desperately need to recruit at least one more attacking option although the paper indicates that the Armenian was a key transfer target before Suarez began pushing for a move away.
The club have agreed a £15 million deal with West Ham United for outcast Andy Carroll but the transfer has now stalled after the former Newcastle man was unsure whether to sign long-term for the Hammers. This transfer impasse could affect any deal for the attacking midfielder although they do expect to complete the £7.7 million transfer of Celta Vigo forward Iago Aspas later this week.
