Liverpool fans in the Football Transfer Tavern were taken aback last week as we reported that Real Madrid were considering a summer move for Reds defender Glen Johnson given his contract impasse at Anfield.
Now Hannah Duncan from Metro has arrived in the tavern to explain that Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has revealed that his ‘top priority’ this summer will be signing up Johnson to a new long-term contract.
The 26-year-old England international is moving into the final year of his existing deal at Anfield and given the interest from Madrid, there are doubts about his future with the Premier League high-flyers.
Rodgers is determined to make a solid contract offer to Johnson who he believes is one of the ‘best full-backs in the world’.
“We want to keep Glen here,’ Rodgers said.
“There is no question about that, especially now he’s in this form. He’s 29 and we feel that he has still got good years ahead of him.
“No contracts will be looked at until the summer but his will be a priority for us, especially if he continues in the form that he’s in.”
We believe that Rodgers’ show of support to Johnson could persuade him to stay at Anfield but what do you think? Let us know your thoughts below.
