Liverpool have been nothing short of outstanding this season. Jurgen Klopp has continued to work his magic with the Anfield outfit as he has continued to improve the club year in and year out and look to be in a position to finally end their major silverware drought.
The German manager has certainly managed to get the best out of a number of his players throughout the campaign, and it appears the club are ready to try and convince one man who has excelled recently to extend his current deal with them.
What’s the News?
According to Football Insider sources, Liverpool are preparing to open talks with Joel Matip about a new deal to remain at Anfield.
The Cameroon international has been a standout in the middle of defence alongside Virgil van Dijk and the Reds are keen to tie him down to a longer contract, as he has just one year left to run on his present one.
Matip has had to fill in for Joe Gomez this season because of the ankle injury the England international picked up and has been impressive, as he looked to make the most of the opportunity and make the position his own in the starting line-up.
The defender has put in a number of solid performances as Liverpool have kept themselves in the race to lift a famous double this season, although there will be a number of sides that will have something to say about that, including Manchester City and Barcelona.
The 27-year-old has built a solid partnership at the back with van Dijk and it does not come as a surprise to hear that Klopp is keen to keep him at Anfield for the foreseeable future.
However, it might be easier said than done with Gomez starting to make a return to action, as Matip may want assurances that he will be in the starting line-up, which is surely something Liverpool cannot offer him.
Also, with the fact that he is set to enter the final 12 months of his present deal, the Premier League side may have to look at offloading him to ensure they receive a transfer fee for him, otherwise, they could risk losing him for nothing next summer.
Liverpool fans, do you think Matip will sign a new deal to remain at Anfield? Are you surprised the club are preparing to open talks? Join in with the discussion below by sharing your thoughts with us.
