The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping to see a new left-back arrive at the club this summer to replace Alberto Moreno, and recent reports suggest they are on the verge of doing just that.
Andrew Robertson stepped in to replace Moreno last season and illustrated the frailties of the Spaniard through his own solid performances at left-back. The Scotland international has now firmly cemented his place as Liverpool’s first-choice left-back, but reports from Portgual suggest he could face fresh competition next season.
According to Portuguese media outlet A Bola, Porto left-back Alex Telles has emerged as a transfer target for both Liverpool and Chelsea, with both clubs prepared to meet a €40 million release clause in order to secure his services.
The 25-year-old defender is considered an indispensable figure within the Porto squad, but they will be forced to accept his departure if one of the aforementioned clubs eventually decides to trigger his release clause.
Our landlord believes that the Reds have plenty of room for improvement this summer and the signing of a new left-back should be considered a priority.
After providing 20-assists from 45 appearances in all-competitions last season, there is no doubt that Telles would provide Liverpool with a devastating attacking weapon in the final-third, however, the supporters want to see defensive solidity from any incoming left-back first and foremost.
A handful of the Reds faithful have reservations about Telles’ ability to match the level set by Robertson last season, but they are naturally eager to see him arrive at the club due to his scintillating form in Portugal.
