Liverpool readying swoop for Bundesliga defender

MatipLiverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are rubbing their hands in anticipation, and to get warm by the fire, after hearing that the club are ready to make moves ahead of planned summer activity.

The Daily Star says Joel Matip has rejected a new contract with Schalke, which has opened up the door for Liverpool to make their move to land the Cameroon international on a free transfer.

The Reds hold high interest in Matip and wanted a move in January but Schalke said no, as they looked to sign their youth product down to a new long-term deal. However, Matip has other ideas and has rejected the terms offer by the German club.

Reviersport state an announcement by Schalke will be made this week, which is expected to confirm the departure of Matip in the summer. That’s good news for Liverpool who have been free to discuss pre-contractual terms with the 23-year-old defender since the turn of the year.

Our landlord believes Liverpool would be making a positive investment by moving for Matip, who he states can bolster the Reds’ defensive line.
