European champions and Premier League title hopefuls Liverpool are set to give star defender Virgil van Dijk a new contract.
Despite having plenty of time to run on his current deal, the Reds are unwilling to give anyone any hope of landing van Dijk, and according to a report from 90min.com, they are set to double the Dutchman’s weekly wages of £125,000 with an impressive new deal.
Van Dijk has been nothing short of superb since joining Liverpool from Southampton and was a key cog in the first XI last season as the Anfield outfit captured the Champions League once again. As a result, he has been nominated for the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year award alongside Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Van Dijk is known for controlling things from the back for Liverpool, with The Telegraph calling him “the commander” last year. And in comparison to new Manchester United defender Harry Maguire, the Dutch defender completed over 1200 more passes than the England man throughout last season.
The Liverpool man was also part of a defence which was well disciplined last season, with van Dijk only picking up one Premier League yellow card in the entire campaign.
It will be massive for Liverpool to get van Dijk tied down to an even better deal.
You just never know in football and if they let his contract tick into the two years remaining stage, for example, clubs like Real Madrid and Barcelona could start to circle.
Van Dijk is so vital to the Reds that him leaving is unimaginable, so the club are right to be doing everything in their power to sort his future out.
