There are some inquisitive looks around the Football Transfer Tavern after the The Express report that Liverpool have turned down a £15 million bid from Barcelona for Daniel Agger but the Catalan club are expected to return with an improved offer.
Speculation yesterday suggested that David Luiz was Barcelona’s prime summer target as they look for a long-term replacement for veteran centre back Carles Puyol but now the Camp Nou outfit appear to be targeting the 28-year-old Reds defender instead.
Chelsea reportedly rejected a £35 million bid for Brazilian international defender David Luiz with Jose Mourinho keen to keep the 26-year-old former Benfica man at Stamford Bridge.
However reports now indicate that Liverpool have turned down an official offer for Daniel Agger but the Spanish club are ready to return with an improved bid of around £25 million that the Reds will find hard to resist.
The 28-year-old cultured Danish defender is understood to be keen on a move to Spain but will wait for the club to accept an offer from Barca before trying to force a move away like team-mate Luis Suarez.
Signed by Rafael Benitez back in 2006, Agger is highly regarded at Anfield and it would be massive blow for Rodgers to lose his key defender weeks before the start of the new season.
There is such concern that Agger – who saw a bid rejected from Manchester City last summer – may secure his transfer that will now prevent Martin Skrtel from joining Napoli in a summer loan move. The Slovakian had been told he could leave last week but that position has now changed given Barcelona’s interest in his team-mate.
