Liverpool reportedly lining up £18.4m move as Klopp looks to solve defensive issues

The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern want their side to challenge for the title this season…

It’s been a strong few years at Anfield, with Jurgen Klopp finally turning his side into real contenders once again. However, to go one step further and seal that elusive Premier League title, he needs to add a bit more quality.

Improvement is needed throughout the first team, but one area of particular concern is in the defence. With the likes of Dejan Lovren and Alberto Moreno struggling to impress over the last year or so, Klopp needs some more reliability at the back.

Fortunately, the German is reportedly seeking a resolution to this problem, with DW Sports reporting on Twitter that Liverpool are keen on a move for Benedikt Höwedes, who currently plays for FC Schalke 04.

A move of around €20 million (£18.4 million) is being mooted, with Liverpool clearly keen to land the German defender.

A versatile player, he is able to play across the back – with a role in central defence and on the right-side of the defence arguably his most natural positions.

Strong defensively, Höwedes would be a consistent addition for the Reds, and given Klopp’s expertise in the Bundesliga, he is undoubtedly well aware of his quality.

Landlord’s Verdict

Höwedes’ versatility would be massive for Liverpool, given that he would be able to fit in where needed on a week-to-week basis.

At 29-years-old, he’s an experienced player that still has a number of years left in him, and so a move would make sense in that regard.

If Liverpool are looking for a quality defensive addition, Höwedes would be a great option.
