It has been a slow summer so far for the Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern…
After a stellar campaign last season, the onus has been on Jurgen Klopp and his staff to ensure that Liverpool are ready for next season, but they have struggled in that regard so far.
Despite seemingly having a long list of targets, the Reds have thus far failed to land many players – with Mohamed Salah the only big name signing at Anfield so far this summer.
However, holding on to your best players is just as important as signing new ones, and so far, Liverpool have done very well at that. They’ve kept their core group of players at the club, and according to the Daily Star, this is not something that they want to see change over the next few weeks.
The Daily Star reports that Liverpool are ready to stand firm on the future of Philippe Coutinho – with Barcelona said to be keen on the Brazilian. Klopp, though, recognises his talent and his side are said to be refusing to sell at any price, though that is unlikely to put off Barcelona.
Coutinho is one of Europe’s finest attackers, and so it is no real surprise that he is courting interest from abroad. Barcelona, likewise, are a top side – and a move to the Spanish club could well tempt Coutinho.
However, Liverpool’s strategy here is certainly the right one, as if he leaves – particularly this close to the start of the season – the Reds could struggle to recover. Their side is built around the creativity that Coutinho brings, and he is irreplaceable in this side.
That said, Barcelona are likely to come in with a big offer should they look to act upon their interest, and it may be too much for the club to turn down. If that is the case, they need to find a replacement quickly.
