Liverpool reportedly seeking to ‘pay more’ to accelerate midfielder deal

Liverpool supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern in recent times after seeing their side edge past Merseyside rivals Everton 2-1 at Anfield on Friday night to book their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their clash with the Toffees off the back of a 13-match unbeaten run in the Premier League, and unbeaten at Anfield in all competitions dating back to their 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace back in April 2017. And the Reds continued their excellent form as goals from James Milner and Virgil van Dijk either side of a Gylfi Sigurdsson equaliser sealed the victory for Klopp’s side, who have taken a step closer in their quest to lift the FA Cup for the first time since 2006.

Subsequently, there have been many delighted Liverpudlians in the Tavern in the last few days, although Philippe Coutinho’s impending move to Barcelona has somewhat dampened their spirits, even if a recent report from The Daily Telegraph suggests that the club will attempt to bring Naby Keita’s move to the club forward to this month.

The 22-year-old has already secured a permanent move to Liverpool this summer after impressing for RB Leipzig last season, netting eight goals and eight assists to help the club finish second in the Bundesliga, and thus qualify for this season’s Champions League.

Yet Coutinho’s departure to Barcelona this month has reportedly tempted Liverpool into bringing Keita’s proposed move to Anfield forward by six months, with the Reds reportedly seeking to ‘pay more’ to lure the Guinea international to Merseyside in January.

And with Keita reportedly happy to move to Liverpool this month, and the Reds seeking reinforcements following Coutinho’s move, it’s a deal which could well be struck come January 31.

Landlord’s verdict: Philippe Coutinho has finally made the move to Barcelona this month, leaving Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp with much to ponder regarding how best to replace the 25-year-old.

Naby Keita will certainly be arriving in the summer after the Reds struck a £57 million deal with RB Leipzig back in August, yet recent reports suggest that the Merseysiders are seeking to ‘pay more’ to bring the move forward to this month in a bid to compensate for Coutinho’s departure.

This may be tricky, but with Keita reportedly happy to make the move this month, it’s a deal which could well take place before the January 31 deadline.
