Liverpool reportedly still want move for 26-year-old this summer

It’s been a quiet summer at Anfield, with the fans in the Transfer Tavern expecting more of Jurgen Klopp before the window closes…

If the club want to challenge for the Premier League title this season, our landlord reckons that a few big names need to make their way to Anfield, but they haven’t had much success in that regard as of yet.

However, according to the Daily Star, the Reds are ready to try their luck once more, with the publication reporting that Virgil van Dijk remains a target for the club, and they are apparently set to revive their interest in the Dutchman after he handed in a transfer request at St Mary’s.

Van Dijk has, of course, had an uncertain future this summer – having not been involved in most of Southampton’s pre-season preparations. Clearly keen to leave the club, the Southampton brass has made the decision to exclude him whilst his future is sorted out, though they also appear hesitant to let him leave all the while.

The defender hasn’t played since the turn of the year after suffering an injury last season, but that clearly isn’t putting off Liverpool as they continue to seek a move.

Landlord’s Verdict

Van Dijk would clearly be a top signing for Liverpool, and his decision to hand in a transfer request does re-open the door for the Reds somewhat.

Of course, Southampton still have to agree to sell and agree on a price, but van Dijk clearly views the move as the last chance saloon. If this doesn’t work, nothing will – and so Liverpool have got to try and get their man.

That said, with just a few weeks to go until the window closes, the Reds need to tie up any deals quickly to avoid a last minute rush.
