It’s non-stop news for Liverpool fans inside the Football Transfer Tavern, with Simon Jones of the Daily Mail reporting that the Reds have agreed a £9 million deal with Sunderland for goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.
Brendan Rodgers has been tracking a new goalkeeper, with the future of Pepe Reina looking uncertain for some time now. The Spaniard has been linked with a return to Barcelona, and the news concerning Mignolet is set to cast further doubt over his Anfield future.
It is expected that the Belgian will finalise his move to Merseyside next week, and could become the third confirmed summer signing for the Reds, who have also completed deals for Manchester City’s Kolo Toure and Sevilla’s Luis Alberto, as well a deal in principle for Celta Vigo striker Iago Aspas.
Sunderland meanwhile are set to use some of the £9 million on United States international striker Jozy Altidore from Dutch side AZ Alkmaar, where he has bagged an impressive 51 goals in 90 games.
The Dutch club are thought to be willing to sell the 23-year-old for around £6 million, who last season broke Clint Dempsey’s record for the most goals scored by an American in Europe, bagging 31 in all competitions.
