While the Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are still a bit upset that Philippe Coutinho has left the club, they are also excited to see who the money will be spent on. Plenty of rumours have been circulating around the Liverpool fans’ booth in the Transfer Tavern since Coutinho’s departure with the likes of Thomas Lemar, Riyad Mahrez and Manuel Lanzini all mentioned.
But, according to a report by The Mirror, Leon Goretzka is still a target for Liverpool. Widespread reports have indicated that Goretzka has all but finalised a move from Schalke to Bayern Munich but Liverpool believe they still have a chance of signing him ahead of the Bundesliga giants.
The 22-year-old is expected to leave Schalke before the summer but Liverpool are ready to lock horns with Bayern Munich in the battle for the exciting youngster’s signature. With the Coutinho money to spend, the Reds are hopeful of poaching Goretzka late and pipping Bayern Munich to his signing.
The 12-cap Germany international is an attack-minded central midfielder and Liverpool are hopeful of adding him to their squad alongside Naby Keita this month. Keita is set to join Liverpool at the end of the season but Jurgen Klopp wants him now and will offer Red Bull Leipzig a higher fee to bring that move forward.
This is an ambitious move by Liverpool but, if they can pull it off, it could be a masterstroke. Goretzka is one of the most highly rated young stars in European football right now and he is already a regular in the Bundesliga and the national side. The 22-year-old has experience despite his young age and is improving as time goes on.
