Liverpool supporters have been making a lot of noise in the Transfer Tavern during the international break after seeing their side pick up three successive victories prior to the fortnight’s interruption.
Jurgen Klopp’s men eased past Huddersfield Town and Maribor prior to a meeting with struggling West Ham in their last league clash, and first half goals from Mohamed Salah and Joel Matip set them on their way to another three points. And although Manuel Lanzini got one back for the hosts ten minutes after the break, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain made it 3-1 moments after before Salah bagged his second and Liverpool’s fourth 15 minutes from time to complete the rout.
Thus, there have been many happy Liverpudlians in the Tavern in the last few days, and they could be about to get a whole lot chirpier if a recent report from Don Balon (via The Daily Star) is anything to go by.
And that’s because they report that the Reds have agreed to sign Leon Goretzka from Bundesliga club Schalke in the January transfer window.
The 22-year-old moved to the German outfit back in 2013 and has since gone from strength to strength at the Veltins-Arena, having played 128 games for the club and scoring 19 goals in the process.
And this term has seen the Germany international take it up another gear with four goals in just nine Bundesliga matches, but his future at Schalke looks far from certain given that he has yet to sign a new deal with the club, with his current one set to expire in the summer.
Thus, there has been much reported interest in Goretzka, namely from Arsenal and Tottenham, but recent reports suggest that Klopp’s Liverpool have won the race for the talented 22-year-old by reportedly agreeing a January deal for the midfielder.
And this news is sure to delight our resident Liverpool supporters, many of whom will see this as a huge coup from their side to beat other European heavyweights to the German’s signature.
Landlord’s verdict: Leon Goretzka has been a shining light in Schalke’s midfield over the last 12 months or so, and his start to this season suggests that he has a huge future in the game.
The 22-year-old has bagged four goals in just nine Bundesliga matches for the club, yet his future appears to be away from the Veltins-Arena as he has yet to extend his current deal with the German outfit, which is set to end in the summer.
And Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool appear to have exploited that uncertainty by reportedly sealing a January agreement to sign the German international, which suggests that they have beaten the likes of Arsenal, Barcelona, and Tottenham to his signature.
Thus, this could well be a huge coup from the Merseysiders, and may set them up perfectly for greater success in the second half of the season.
