Liverpool set to reward star man with new deal to ward off Real Madrid

Raheem Sterling Liverpool fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern are looking up with the first smiles that we have seen on their faces for a while as the Sunday Mirror claim that Raheem Sterling is set to get a new deal with the club.

Now as some of our regulars note, we have talked a fair bit about a new deal for Sterling, but this time it seems that Liverpool are willing not only to up his wages as we expected but also to include a £60 million clause in the deal which would at least offer them some protection should Real Madrid come calling.

It is a measure of just how much Sterling has impressed according to our regulars, that Real Madrid have been linked to him – and after seeing Luis Suarez leave for Barcelona,, the Reds and manager Brendan Rodgers are understandably cautious and want to at least ensure that should Sterling’s head be turned by another club, they will be financially protected.

We think that Sterling is best staying at Liverpool for now, but the fact of the matter is that the Reds need to get Champions League football again to make sure their brightest stars want to stay at the club.

Liverpool fans. Is Sterling worth £60 million? Let us know your thoughts below.
