Liverpool set to swoop for Greek ace

Kyriakos PapadopoulosThere are interesting looks around the Football Transfer Tavern as MirrorFootball report that Liverpool are preparing a revived £13million bid for Schalke defender Kyriakos Papadopoulos but only after he proves his fitness in an initial loan spell.

The 21-year-old made just 10 appearances for the German side last term after he had an operation to solve a troublesome knee injury and that has caused complications with any possible transfer away.

However Reds manager Brendan Rodgers is still concerned about the defender’s fitness and wants to take him on an 12-month loan deal before paying a fee of around £13m if he passes the season without any serious injuries.

The German side are thought to want cash up front for the Greek international but may accept a compromise given the fact Papadopolous hasn’t featured for the side since November due to his knee operation.

Reports in Greece suggest a deal to take the powerful defender to Anfield is almost complete with just a stringent medical to pass before he becomes the next summer signing at Anfield.

Rodgers could be set to lose one another of his centre-backs this summer after Rafael Benitez targeted a move for Marten Skrtel after the Slovakian international fell out of favour at Anfield towards the end of last season.  But the Reds will only let the 28-year-old reunite with his former boss if they have a replacement in beforehand with Napoli willing to pay £10m for Skrtel.
