Liverpool setback in attempts to land top target

alderweireld.jpgPunters inside the Football Transfer Tavern seem to have been linking Liverpool with every player under the sun of late, but sources at Sky Sports have played down a rumour concerning a move for an Ajax defender.

Toby Alderweireld has played down talk of a summer switch to Anfield, but has admitted he is keeping his options open for when the transfer window opens.

The defender was previously quoted in a Belgian newspaper saying Liverpool ‘meets my criteria’ but has now moved to play down those comments.

“I have also read that Liverpool would be interested,” Alderweireld told Dutch newspaper Metro.

“I never said Liverpool would be my next club. Nothing is true about that.”

Alderweireld is expected to leave the Dutch giants this summer along with team-mates Siem de Jong and Christian Eriksen, with the latter also being linked with a switch to Brendan Rodgers’ side.
But the Belgian has not ruled out the possibilty of staying put, claiming he is still very happy in Amsterdam.

“Ajax is in every way a fantastic club. We play for prizes every year and we also show good things on a regular basis in Europe,” he added.

“After the season I will look at my options. Possibly, I even stay at Ajax.”
