The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern have been waxing lyrical about the performances of their fluid front-three all season long, but their lack of depth beyond Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino suggests further additions will be needed this summer.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have proven they are one of the most devastating counter-attacking teams in Europe this season, and winning the Champions League will certainly provide further validation for that opinion. If Liverpool are to win the Champions League they will be forced to do so without Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain who has been ruled out for the season.
Although Liverpool have plenty of back-up options in central midfield, Oxlade-Chamberlain’s injury is rather concerning due to the fact that an injury to one of their front-three will leave them in a predicament during the final weeks of the season. The Reds have been rather fortunate with injuries this season as Salah, Firmino and Mane have remained fully fit throughout, but lady luck cannot continue to shine on Anfield forever.
With that being said, Klopp must delve into the transfer market this summer to sign players who have the ability to challenge Salah, Firimino and Mane for a place in Liverpool’s first team, and one player they would be wise to consider is Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema, although they face competition from West Ham for his signature according to Diario Gol. The report claims that the Hammers are set to launch an audacious €40 million bid to sign the Frenchman this summer, despite the fact they are unable to offer him Champions League football.
On the other hand, Liverpool should be in a position to offer the three-time Champions League winner just that next season, so they should rival West Ham’s bid in the summer to prevent complacency from slipping in to Firmino’s game. The Brazilian has deservedly stolen plenty of plaudits this season for his form in a false-nine role at the spearhead of Liverpool’s attack, but his place has been largely unchallenged.
Man City’s success with both Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero during the past season and a half has proven that not only is a balancing act of two high-calibre players possible, but also highly beneficial. Liverpool should take note of City’s success with the presence of two strikers and bring Benzema (valued at £45 million by Transfermarkt) to the club to provide Klopp with a different option at centre-forward who can breed further success due to the increased intensity of competition for places.
