Liverpool should land Tottenham’s £27m-rated midfielder to replace Emre Can this summer

The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern have widely accepted that Emre Can will be departing the club this summer, and they are hoping their club will sign a replacement in the event of his departure.

Jurgen Klopp is set to welcome Naby Keita to Anfield this summer in a deal which has captured the imagination of the Liverpool supporters, but his arrival could arrive in tandem with the departure of Emre Can who is yet to sign a new contract with the club. Can’s future has been the subject of intense speculation for the entirety of the season so far, and with only two months left remaining on his current contract it appears his future is destined to be played away from the club.

If that proves to be the case then Liverpool will need to return to the transfer market for another central midfield player, as Keita prefers to operate in a more advanced role to the one which Can has predominantly played in this season. And recent reports from the Daily Mail suggest that an ideal replacement for Can will become available this summer, namely Victor Wanyama of Tottenham Hotspur.

According to the report, Mauricio Pochettino wants to offload Wanyama, Toby Alderweireld, Mousa Dembele and Danny Rose this summer in order to accumulate £170 million to fund the acquisition of new talent, and if that proves to be the case then Liverpool would be foolish not to make a bid for Wanyama. The Kenyan international (valued at £26 million by Transfermarkt) has struggled for first-team opportunities this season mostly due to an injury problem he struggled with during the first-half of the season, but also due to competition for places.

Considering Wanyama’s quality, there’s no doubt he will be disappointed with the level of opportunity he is getting at Tottenham, so he should be open to the prospect of a transfer this summer. Wanyama is the perfect candidate to replace Can; he possesses an excellent understanding of the game, a fantastic range of passing and a commanding physical presence.

Tottenham are unlikely to be thrilled by the idea of selling to a Premier League rival, but if the right offer arrives for Wanyama’s services they may be forced to reluctantly allow him to move to Anfield this summer. Naturally, Jurgen Klopp will be desperate to see Can sign a contract extension with the club, but if the German international decides against signing fresh terms with the Reds then he should do everything he can to sign Wanyama from Tottenham.
