Liverpool should launch a surprise move for this 1-time PL winner in January – agreed?

It’s clear, at least from the perspective of the Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern, that some new faces are needed at Anfield in January. The Reds have enjoyed a good few weeks, but the problems that they faced earlier in the season are still very prevalent. Though they’ve got a strong attack, their defensive line is a weak point of the Liverpool team, and this must be addressed.

If Jurgen Klopp genuinely wants to compete at the highest level, his team needs to have a strong base, and at present he just hasn’t got that. A few new defensive signings in January, then, are essential. One name that our landlord thinks that he should be considering is Chelsea defender David Luiz.

Luiz moved back to Chelsea from PSG last summer, in what was perhaps one of the most shocking deals of the summer, and he was nothing short of a revelation. Arguably the Premier League’s most consistent defender last term, Luiz proved his quality and his experience in the heart of the Chelsea defence, hardly putting a foot wrong in the process. He had clearly grown up whilst in Paris, and the mistakes that he was once known for were out of his game almost entirely.

He’d be a good fit at Liverpool for a few reasons. Firstly, and perhaps most significantly, he is – simply put – a very solid defender. He’s excellent with the ball at his feet, and he’s an expert tackler, often proving impossible to get past. The mental side of his game is also practically faultless, with his timing and awareness often meaning that he is one step ahead of opposition attackers.

You’d think, then, given his fine form, that Chelsea wouldn’t want to sell. That might not be the case, though, as he has found himself out of the first team in recent weeks owing to the fine form of Andreas Christensen. Christensen is excelling for the Blues, and there is no clear route back into the Chelsea first team for Luiz at present. Given his age, then, the Blues could look to cash in, and he would be the perfect January Liverpool signing – agreed?
