Having already blown the bank is 2018 with the £75 million acquisition of Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool fans here in The Transfer Tavern are extremely excited about what the new year holds for their side.
Manager Jurgen Klopp has gradually assembled one of the most dangerous attacking line-ups in European football, and despite constant speculation linking midfielder Philippe Coutinho with a move away from the club, fans remain optimistic that their side are in the best shape they have been for many years to challenge for the title. The likes of Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino are in electric form, and the performances of summer signing Mo Salah have been nothing short of magical so far.
What has let the Scousers down in recent years however is their back-line, and Klopp will know that despite adding van Dijk to the squad in a record deal, one more quality central defender could be required if his side are to be considered serious title contenders from next season. The view was shared by our resident Liverpool fans, who crowded around the bar to have a chat with our landlord about their continuing concerns surrounding the defence.
Happy with the signing of van Dijk, our lot wanted more, with our European football expert landlord suggesting a swoop for impressive Atletico Bilbao defender, Aymeric Laporte. The 23-year-old has shone for a number of years in the Basque region, and could be swayed by a move to Liverpool following the ambition shown to break the bank for van Dijk.
The young star has already made an impressive twenty-two appearances in all competitions this season and is well past the 150 outings mark at this early stage of his career. A former French U21 international, Laporte is knocking on the door of a first-team call-up ahead of the World Cup, but knows that he may be forced to leave northern Spain in order to achieve his Russian dream.
Ridiculously elegant on the ball, Laporte would be the classiest defender on Merseyside since the glory days of historic Anfield legend, Alan Hansen.
Liverpool must be in line to bring the player to the Premier League, as he could be yet another step towards completing his talented squad. Liverpool will have the money to spend should they allow Coutinho to leave, and if Klopp invests the money in the back-line, then silverware could be on its way to Anfield.
Liverpool fans, would one more quality defender alongside van Dijk transform your side into title contenders? Let us know!
