Liverpool fans in the Tavern are buzzing following their side’s emphatic 5-2 victory over Roma in the Champions League semi-finals. Two away goals from the Italians spoiled an almost perfect evening, but the Reds are still well on their way to Kiev.
Still, while much improved since the arrival of Virgil Van Dijk, Dejan Lovren was at fault for Roma’s first goal when his misjudged header allowed Edin Dzeko to control in the box and fire past Loris Karius.
The former Southampton defender was phenomenal against Manchester City in the previous round. However, another mistake has potentially cost his side – a frequent theme throughout the season despite his improved performances. If The Reds are to challenge for the Premier League title next season, is Lovren could enough to play at the heart of the defence?
With that in mind, Jurgen Klopp should look to add another stellar centre back to his squad with the Croatian providing more than adequate back-up with Liverpool set to compete in multiple competitions next year.
One man who should be targeted is Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld.
The Belgium defender has been a crucial player under Mauricio Pochettino in recent years, forming a formidable partnership with Jan Vertonghen but injuries and rumours of discontent have meant he has made just 11 appearances so far this season.
Valued at £36m by Transfermarkt, the former Atletico Madrid has a been linked with a Tottenham exit for a while now and Spurs have previously shown a willingness to sell to direct rivals, as was the case with Kyle Walker and Manchester City.
Alderweireld has Premier League experience and would slot in seamlessly alongside Van Dijk in the heart of the defence. Good on the ball and commanding in the air, the 29-year-old could be the perfect addition to boost Liverpool’s title challenge.
Liverpool fans, would Toby Alderweireld be a good signing? Let us know!
