The Liverpool fans in the Transfer tavern are encouraged by recent reports which claim they are set to bid for a centre-back this summer.
Jurgen Klopp’s decision to bring Virgil Van Dijk to the club has paid dividends thus far, as it’s unlikely his side would have qualified for the Champions League final without him. The Dutch international’s presence in Liverpool’s back-four has certainly installed a level of solidity which had previously been absent throughout Klopp’s reign at the club, but the resident Reds faithful propping up our bar believe there is still room for improvement.
With that being said, the supporters will be pleased by reports in The Independent which claim the club are interested in making a bid for James Tarkowski or Jamaal Lascelles this summer. Both of the aforementioned players have been in brilliant form for their respective clubs this season, however, on balance, Lascelles’ performances have been the more eye-catching of the two.
Considering Lascelles is the Magpies’ captain, it would certainly require a huge offer for Liverpool to prise him away from St James’ Park, so they must offer Dominic Solanke in a part-exchange swap deal if they wish to have any chance of completing a transfer. The 20-year-old striker (valued at £7.2 million by Transfermarkt) has struggled to break into Liverpool’s first-team this season amidst strong competition from Roberto Firmino for a starting berth.
There’s no doubt that Solanke has struggled to make an impression when he has been given a rare opportunity to shine, but the sporadic moments of quality he has displayed suggest he is a fine goal-scoring talent simply waiting to be unearthed. Solanke ended the season on a high note by slamming home his first goal for the Reds during a 4-0 demolition against Brighton on the final day of the Premier League season, and the manner in which he took his goal suggests his confidence is on the rise.
Following a frustrating season in front of goal, Rafa Benitez will be scouting the market for new attacking talent this summer, so the prospect of bringing Solanke to the club is one which will certainly appeal to him. Naturally, Newcastle’s manager will be desperate to keep hold of Lascelles, but if the 24-year-old centre-back eventually requests a transfer to Anfield, he should ensure that Solanke is included as part of a potential deal.
