Liverpool should sign this £13.5m-rated goalkeeper this summer – here’s why

Liverpool fans down in the Transfer Tavern are still concerned about their backline ahead of the new season.

The supporters are urging Jurgen Klopp to bring in another centre-back to step up competition with Joel Matip, Dejan Lovren and Ragnar Klavan.

It appears the transfer saga involving Virgil van Dijk is set to rumble on until the close of the deadline, but we think the Reds should be just as agitated about their goalkeeping security.

Neither Simon Mignolet or Loris Karius particularly impressed last season, with both the subject of heavy criticism from Liverpool fans and pundits as they traded the number one spot.

Yet it appears that Jurgen Klopp is content in maintaining the two for this season at least – a risky decision indeed.

Liverpool are now back in the Champions League and have real potential of surmounting a title challenge this season. Klopp needs to be ruthless and cut one goalkeeper loose in search of another more dependable shot-stopper.

Stoke City’s Jack Butland, who is rated at £13.5m by Transfer Markt, doesn’t do lapses of concentration. The Englishman, who was sidelined through injury for 12 months, returned to action for Stoke in April and gave reminders of his huge potential.

The Potters are of course desperate to keep hold of the 24-year-old, but for Liverpool, this is an opportunity to seal a star for not just the future, but the present.

Stoke’s No 1 could well be England’s No 1 by the time the World Cup rolls around next summer, which means his price-tag will be substantially higher.

With fantastic shot stopping, a real presence in the 18-yard box and leadership potential, Butland is the real deal.

Liverpool should cash-in and ensure some solidity in between the sticks this season.

Reds fans, if you were Klopp, who would you cut loose? Or are you satisfied with both ‘keepers? Let us know in the comments…
