Liverpool have had a busy transfer window thus far, but once again have failed to plug the defensive gaps which have haunted them for the last few seasons.
The Reds drew 3-3 with Watford yesterday to highlight further their need for defensive reinforcements, despite their attacking playing being stunning at time.
The Liverpool fans here in the Tavern have been delighted with how things have been going in the main though, and our landlord has been sat having a few pints with them in the sun this week discussing potential signings this summer.
One player who our landlord dropped into conversation as someone he thought could do a job at the Anfield is Man United defender Chris Smalling.
The former Fulham man came from obscurity to suddenly be at the top level of the game at Old Trafford, and over the last few seasons has developed into a reliable performer at club and international level.
However, there is a strong feeling that he could be moved on by United manager Jose Mourinho, with whom he seems to have fallen out of favour with somewhat.
This could have an adverse effect on Smalling, but should not put him off a career where he remains in the English top flight.
A move to a huge club like Liverpool – although controversial – could be the ideal sort of move he needs, and with a defence which needs tightening up, it could give Smalling the chance to seize the moment and become a top Premier League defender again.
Liverpool fans, what do you think? Good signing? Let us know!
