Liverpool supporters in the Transfer Tavern are pleased with the acquisition of Arsenal’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Having rejected a move to Premier League Champions Chelsea, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has joined Liverpool to play in his favoured position of central midfield. While many of our resident Reds supporters are pleased with the transfer, our landlord is struggling to understand the reasoning behind the transfer.
The Reds have an established pool of midfield options to choose from, Emre Can, Jordan Henderson, Georginio Wijnaldum, James Milner and Marko Grujic can all play as central midfielders. Additionally, Liverpool has agreed on the future transfer of Naby Keita from RB Leipzig. Unless Chamberlain is going to replace an established member of Liverpool’s starting eleven, it seems unlikely that the ‘Ox’ will be able to feature regularly in his favoured position.
Perhaps Chamberlain needs to be prepared to utilise his versatility and play in whatever position that Klopp decides. If he wants to play for a top side, he needs to recognise that he should play where best his skills are needed. For Liverpool, a role on either flank – much like James Milner – could be the best position for him to feature in. Clearly, though, his decision to move to Anfield was decided on the increased prospect of playing centrally – leaving our landlord scratching his head.
Regarding adaptability and versatility, Liverpool has made one of the signings of the summer, yet as a central midfielder, our landlord is unconvinced that Chamberlain is superior to their current midfield options.
