The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are delighted with their side’s signing of Virgil van Dijk. The Dutchman has been one of the Premier League’s best defenders in recent years, but his signing has left fans wanting more. Indeed, there is a sense that under Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool are a team on the up.
They need to capitalise on this momentum, then, and another major signing could be just the ticket. If they can bring two top names in in January, the likes of Chelsea and Man Utd could find themselves caught up in the race for second-place. It won’t be easy, but our landlord thinks that Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka could be the perfect addition.
A central midfielder by trade, Goretzka is one of Europe’s most exciting young talents. 22-years-old, he is a regular in the Bundesliga, and he has impressed with the way that he is able to control games through the heart of the midfield. Providing fantastic shooting, running, dribbling and passing, he is, in many ways, the complete midfielder.
Significantly, his contract expires at the end of the season, and so a cut-price move in January certainly isn’t out of the question. He won’t be overly cheap, of course, but a player of his quality would generally be attached to a massive fee, and so Klopp could land himself a bargain given his contract status. Alternatively, a free transfer at the end of the season could be attractive.
He’d provide the perfect balance to an already decent midfield, with the German able to serve as a glue to mould the defensive Jordan Henderson and the offensive Philippe Coutinho together. He could be the final piece in this puzzle for Klopp.
