Liverpool supporters have been slightly frustrated in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their team concede a last-minute equaliser to end up drawing 2-2 with fellow Champions League chasers Tottenham at Anfield on Sunday.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their clash with the North London outfit off the back of beating Huddersfield Town in midweek, and knowing that victory over Spurs would move them five points clear of their opponents in the race for a Premier League top four spot. And they looked on course for all three points when Mohamed Salah’s brace, his second an absolute beauty, gave them a 2-1 lead with just moments of the game remaining, only for Harry Kane to make amends for an earlier penalty miss by firing home a 95th minute spot-kick to secure a deserved point for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
Subsequently, there have been some disappointed Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, although many are hopeful that their side can get back to winning ways when they travel to struggling Southampton on Sunday.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Reds fans to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that Real Madrid midfielder Isco could be on his way out of the club this summer.
And with Liverpool selling and then failing to replace influential ace Philippe Coutinho during the January transfer window, they must now do all they can to land the Spain international in the summer.
Ultimately, the 25-year-old’s time in the Spanish capital has been a successful one, both for him and the club, with the midfield star managing 40 goals and 51 assists in 222 games for the club, which equates to a direct contribution every 153 minutes.
And that is a mightily impressive return for someone who doesn’t always get a start in Zinedine Zidane’s team, such are their embarrassment of riches, and is actually only five minutes more than Coutinho’s average during his stint at Liverpool between 2013 and 2018.
More importantly though, the Reds would be replacing a match-winner in Coutinho with another match-winner in Isco, who is able to come up with that magic when things aren’t going well or teams are proving tough to break down, either by scoring a fine goal or by threading a through ball between the defensive line.
And following Liverpool’s 1-0 defeat at Swansea City the other week, they are crying out for a player like that in their midfield ranks – they are arguably going to miss Coutinho more in games against so-called ‘lesser’ sides than against the other top six clubs such is the emphasis on the creativity of the front players.
And Isco has all that in his locker, and at the age of 25, he should be slowly but surely entering his peak years which, given what he has already achieved on the football field, must be a frightening prospect for any opposition.
Undoubtedly, Coutinho’s departure has left a hole in Liverpool’s creative ranks, yet Klopp could fill that by going after £67.5 million-rated Isco (as per Transfermarkt) in the summer, in a deal the Reds chief simply must get done ahead of the 2018/19 season.
