Our Liverpool and Tottenham fans here in the Transfer Tavern cannot wait for their sides to get going this season as both think that they are on the way to a Premier League title challenge.
Indeed, Spurs came close to winning the league last season and have the same squad pretty much to try and go again whilst the Reds have Mo Salah and Andy Robertson, in particular, to try and wrestle the title off of Chelsea.
How both do, then, remains to be seen but with both apparently chasing Douglas Costa before he moved to Juventus – who has seemingly thrown a sly dig.
Costa, who was linked with Spurs by Bild – via The Independent – and with Liverpool by Bild – via The Express, moved to Juve and revealed that the better chance of winning something this season is what saw him turn down a move elsewhere.
Indeed, the tricky winger revealed to Gazzetta dello Sport – via talkSPORT:
“Why Juventus? Because in three years they played two Champions League finals, they’re the team with the most desire and the most opportunities to win the Champions League.
“I want to enter into the history of this club. One year out from the World Cup, I couldn’t have chosen a better club.”
Clearly, then, the winger feels that the likes of Liverpool and Spurs aren’t going to be as close to winning the big trophies this season.
And, whilst that makes sense with Juventus in Serie A and the dominant force, the Premier League clubs will want to prove him wrong.
Costa is a top class player and Liverpool and Spurs will be unhappy that they missed out him – though it’s unclear how much they really wanted him.
Indeed, his comments have certainly suggested that they’ve still got some work to do until they are at the top table in Europe and that is the task that awaits Jurgen Klopp and Mauricio Pochettino this season and beyond.
