Liverpool fans look up keenly in the Football Transfer Tavern as their number one goalie’s time seems to be running out with their manager lining up a replacement.
According to The Express, Brendan Rodgers is preparing to bring in former Barcelona keeper Victor Valdes who is a free agent following Simon Mignolet’s recent performances which have been questionable at best.
Regular customers in the tavern last season agreed that if Simon Mignolet didn’t leak in as many goals as he did, then they would have certainly won the league after he made a few blunders during 2013/14.
But many people believed that he would need a season of transition and it will cost him and the club a few mistakes but it seems he just can’t cut it in the first team of a title challenging squad.
This makes Valdes seem like the perfect replacement after having won the Champions League, La Liga, World Cup and the European Championships, whilst being at Barcelona.
Mignolet only joined the Reds from Sunderland in 2013 meaning that it is likely they may cling on to him and keep him as their reserve keeper although Rodgers may struggle to persuade him to stay on as there will be inevitable interest.
Former Liverpool captain, Jamie Carragher, said: “I think the best goalkeepers who win big trophies make big saves at big moments. That was a big moment (Phil Jagielka’s winner in the Merseyside derby). It’s not a massive mistake, but can he do better?
“Everyone always talks about Steven Gerrard slipping and costing Liverpool the league and you can never look at one individual and one mistake, but Demba Ba still had to go through. You’re looking at your keeper and thinking: ‘Come on, win us the league. Make that save that’s going to be a defining moment in the season.”
Liverpool fans. Would you swap Mignolet for Victor Valdes as soon as he regains fitness after his injury? Let us know your thoughts below.
