Metro have a claim that Liverpool fans feel indifferent about today in the Football Transfer Tavern as they note that Stewart Downing is ready to stay and fight for his place at Anfield.
The former Aston Villa winger has been linked with a move away from the Merseyside club for quite some time now and various lower end Premier League sides have reportedly been credited with an interest.
However, after speaking with Brendan Rodgers, it seems that a stay at the club and new motivation to fight for a place in the first team ahead of the World Cup next summer in Brazil is what Downing now plans on doing.
The England international noted to the Liverpool Daily Post that: “I have spoken to the manager and he’s told me that he’s happy for me to stay.
“As far as I see it I’m here to play. He wants to build a squad and not dismantle it.
“If I’m not in the team and not playing that is a discussion we will have to have then but at the minute I have absolutely no reason to leave.
“I was really happy with the second half of last season. I got a good run at it and now I just want to carry on.
“I have to make sure I stay in the team. Some new players have come in and a few more will arrive. If they do, so be it. I am ready for what’s coming.”
The club are currently trying to hold onto Luis Suarez who Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is set to bid £40 million for this summer.
