Neil Ashton of the Daily Mail has caused a stir as he reminds Liverpool fans of the bare facts that if they do not hand Raheem Sterling a new contract extension with a significantly larger wage, then it is inevitable that Europe’s elite clubs will come knocking on the door.
Despite the 19-year-old having two years remaining on his contract, our tavern regulars are familiar with Real Madrid’s interest in Sterling with Los Blancos supposedly leading the chase for his signature.
Sterling’s current contract sees him earn £30,000-a-week including other bonuses, which adds up to annual amount around £1.5 million a year.
As Premier League contracts go, £30,000 is low on the spectrum, with fellow team-mates Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert earning a lot more than him, despite having considerably less impact on the team.
But Reds boss Brendan Rodgers has insisted that the teenager is in no rush to sign a new and improved deal, despite the talk of a potential exit growing.
Punters in the tavern believe that Liverpool should do all they can to hand him a new deal even if he is no rush to sign a new one because they cannot afford to lose him as he continues to his bit to fill in for the absence of Luis Suarez.
Liverpool fans. Do you agree with the punters? Do you think Liverpool should tie him up on a new deal immediately or remain to be patient? Let us know your thoughts below.
