Liverpool supporters have been in fine voice in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their side become the first team to beat table-toppers Manchester City in the Premier League this season courtesy of a 4-3 success at Anfield last weekend.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their encounter with the runaway leaders off the back of a 17-match unbeaten streak in all competitions, a run which has seen them move above both Arsenal and Tottenham in the race for a top four finish. And the Reds usurped champions Chelsea in third on Sunday as goals from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, and Mohamed Salah secured the three points for the Merseyside giants, in turn inflicting a first league loss on Pep Guardiola’s City.
Consequently, there have been several buoyant Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, many of whom are likely to be intrigued by a recent report from The Daily Mirror, which suggests that Emre Can’s future at the club could become clearer following Leon Goretzka’s move to Bayern Munich.
The 23-year-old has been subject of speculation for a while now given his contract situation at Anfield, with his current deal set to expire in the summer and as of yet no extension agreed.
As such, there has been much interest in the German’s services, notably from Juventus, and although this particular report was written before Goretzka secured a deal to Bayern this morning, it does suggest that were his compatriot to indeed seal that move, it would raise the chances of Can staying at Liverpool.
And with Goretzka’s move now having taken place, there could potentially be some good news around the corner for our resident Reds fans in the coming weeks.
Landlord’s verdict: Emre Can’s future at Liverpool has been in the news for a while now, with Juventus one side reportedly keen on exploiting his expiring contract by landing him either this month or in the summer.
However, recent reports (written before Leon Goretzka’s move to Bayern Munich was confirmed) suggested that Can’s own future hinged on what Goretzka were to do next, with it reported that were his compatriot to leave for Munich, Can would ‘lean towards’ remaining at Anfield.
And with that deal having been confirmed on Friday, it’s plausible that the 23-year-old could well stay at Liverpool after all.
