The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are still hoping for a few big names to move to Anfield this summer…
However, one player that doesn’t look likely to join is Virgil van Dijk, with the Reds still reportedly treading on egg shells regarding a possible move. According to the Mirror, van Dijk is training alone having requested a transfer away from Southampton this summer, but Liverpool are unlikely to make a move for him in an effort to not disrupt renewed peace between the two clubs.
Of course, Liverpool were forced into making an embarrassing apology earlier this summer following their illegal courting of the player, and whilst the clubs have since made peace with one another, there is a genuine fear that a renewed move for the Dutchman could halt that.
It’s a very tough spot for Liverpool as clearly van Dijk is keen on a move, and he is exactly the type of player that they are after, but a deal remains very unlikely at present.
For Southampton, though, keeping an unhappy player doesn’t make a lot of sense, especially when you consider just how much money they would likely generate from his sale.
This will come as another transfer blow for Liverpool, with another report from the Times suggesting that the club have admitted defeat in their pursuit of Naby Keita.
In truth, it has been a disappointing summer for Liverpool so far – despite the capture of Mo Salah – and our landlord thinks that if they can’t land van Dijk, the Reds could struggle next season.
