Liverpool ‘submit offer’ to sign former Premier League captain

VermaelenLiverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are getting all excited about who Jurgen Klopp could bring into the club this summer but they’ve expressed their concerns about one report in particular.

Spanish outlet Sport state Liverpool have submitted a formal offer to save Thomas Vermaelen from his Barcelona nightmare, after what’s been a poor few seasons from the Belgian in Catalonia.

30-year-old Vermaelen, who was previously captain at Arsenal, spent the majority of his first season in Spain sidelined through injury and has struggled to establish himself in the first-team, finding himself behind Gerard Pique and Javier Mascherano in the pecking order.

Having made just 11 La Liga appearances during his two-years with the Spanish giants, the player would likely accept a move back to England and our landlord can’t see Barcelona standing in the way of an exit.

However, with Liverpool having already secured a deal to bring Joel Matip to the club in the summer and consistently being linked to a number of top defenders, fans at the bar are wondering where Vermaelen would fit-in at Anfield.

Our landlord has reminded them though that veteran Kolo Toure is still currently on their books, whilst Mamadou Sakho could be facing a suspension after failing a drugs test.

Liverpool fans, is Vermaelen the sort of defender you should be targeting? Let us know in the comments below!
